New Delhi, 6 September: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit flood-ravaged North India in the coming days, as the death toll from relentless rains since June has crossed 500.
Sources said the Prime Minister will tour Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab to take stock of rescue operations and meet affected families. The visit comes amid mounting criticism from opposition parties, who accuse the Centre of being “slow and unprepared” in handling the crisis.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting yesterday, directing NDRF and state authorities to intensify relief work. So far, thousands have been evacuated, but officials admit that poor connectivity and landslides have slowed rescue efforts.
The floods have also caused massive damage to infrastructure, with roads, bridges, and power lines washed away. Rail traffic in parts of Punjab and Himachal remains suspended.
Modi, in a message earlier this week, assured that the Centre stands “shoulder to shoulder” with the affected states and promised long-term rehabilitation support once the situation stabilises.
