Amritsar, Dec 26: Amritsar police on Friday said they arrested a firing accused after he was injured in an alleged encounter while being taken for the recovery of a weapon in the Chheharta police station area.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the accused, identified as Amritpal Singh alias Roni, allegedly fired at the police team near Marian Road while attempting to retrieve a firearm.
“The accused produced a loaded pistol and fired at police personnel,” Bhullar said. “The police responded in self-defense and overpowered him.”
The accused was injured during the encounter and later arrested, police said.
The incident is linked to a shooting complaint filed by Jaspal Singh of Ramdas Colony, who told police that Amritpal Singh and another man, Harpreet Niyana, had fired at him from an XUV vehicle with the intent to kill.
“He narrowly escaped death but suffered a gunshot wound to his leg,” Bhullar said.
Police said Amritpal Singh, 25, worked as a delivery boy and was arrested during the investigation. A separate case under the NDPS Act involving a commercial quantity of heroin has been registered against him.
The XUV vehicle used in the firing has been seized, police said. The second accused is on the run, and multiple teams have been formed to track him down.
“Such crimes, especially firing in residential localities, will not be tolerated,” the police commissioner said.
