New Delhi, Oct 19: A 22-year-old pregnant woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her former live-in partner in Delhi’s Nabi Karim area on Saturday night, before her husband overpowered and fatally stabbed the attacker, police said.
The deceased were identified as Shalini, wife of Aakash, and Aashu alias Shailendra, 34, a “bad character” listed at Nabi Karim Police Station. Shalini was the mother of two and pregnant at the time of her death, police confirmed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Nidhin Valsan said the incident occurred around 10.15 pm on Qutub Road when Shalini and her husband were headed to meet her mother, Sheila. “Aashu suddenly appeared and attacked Aakash with a knife,” Valsan said.
Aakash, 23, managed to dodge the first strike, but Aashu turned on Shalini, who was sitting in an e-rickshaw, and stabbed her multiple times. “Aakash rushed to save her and was also stabbed, but he managed to overpower Aashu, snatch the knife, and stab him during the scuffle,” the DCP added.
According to police, Shalini’s brother Rohit and several locals rushed all three injured to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared Shalini and Aashu dead. Aakash, who sustained multiple stab wounds, is undergoing treatment.
Police said the attack happened in full public view on a busy stretch near Qutub Road, triggering panic among onlookers.
Preliminary inquiry revealed that Shalini had previously lived with Aashu during a period of marital separation from Aakash. “The couple had reconciled later, and Shalini returned to live with Aakash and their two children,” DCP Valsan said.
Investigators said Aashu had reportedly been enraged by the reunion and also claimed to be the father of Shalini’s unborn child. “Aashu was a listed Bad Character (BC) of Nabi Karim Police Station and had prior criminal cases. Aakash too has three previous criminal involvements,” the DCP noted.
Police have registered a case under Sections 103-1 (murder) and 109-1 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint filed by Shalini’s mother, Sheila.
The investigation is underway to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the fatal confrontation, police said.
