Prime accused in Patiala jail attack shifted to Sangrur

by TheReportingTimes

Patiala, Sept 17 — The transfer of murder accused Sandeep Singh alias Sunny from Patiala Central Jail to Sangrur has sparked protests by his family, who accused authorities of defying a court directive ordering his immediate medical examination.

Sunny, the prime accused in the 2022 Amritsar daylight killing of Shiv Sena leader Sudhir Suri, allegedly attacked three retired police officers inside Patiala jail on September 10. The injured were identified as former deputy superintendent of police Gurbachan Singh and former inspectors Sooba Singh and Inderjit Singh. While Gurbachan and Sooba are serving life sentences handed down by CBI courts, Inderjit is facing trial in another case.

Following the incident, Sunny’s family moved court alleging he was being tortured inside prison and sought an independent medical evaluation. The Patiala court ordered on Monday that a board of doctors at Government Rajindra Hospital examine him and submit a report “on or before 10 am on September 17.”

However, Sunny’s lawyer, advocate GPS Ghuman, claimed the order was disregarded. “The court clearly directed that a medical board at Rajindra Hospital should examine him immediately, but instead of complying, jail authorities transferred him to Sangrur. This amounts to a violation,” Ghuman said.

Sunny’s family staged a protest outside Patiala jail on Tuesday, demanding that the medical examination be conducted without further delay. His brother, Mandeep Singh, accused jail officials of deliberately stalling the process. “The jail authorities are delaying the medical examination. We will continue to hold a protest until he gets justice,” Mandeep said.

Sunny, who was shifted to a high-security barrack in Patiala in November 2024 after alleged threats to his life from other inmates, is now lodged in Sangrur. His medical examination is yet to be carried out as directed by the court.
