New Delhi, 27 December 2024 – PK Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, paid homage to his former teacher, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Friday following the latter’s demise. Dr Singh, known for his contributions as an economist and former prime minister, had taught Mishra during his time at the Delhi School of Economics (DSE).

Reflecting on the loss, Mishra said, “Dr Manmohan Singh was an exemplary leader, a distinguished economist, and a kind human being. My association with him began during my first year of Master’s studies when he taught international trade at DSE.” He noted Dr Singh’s exceptional talent for breaking down complex topics, making them accessible and engaging for students.

Mishra also recalled his experience as a young student from Odisha’s Sambalpur district, finding encouragement in professors of Dr Singh’s caliber. “Studying under figures like Dr Manmohan Singh, Amartya Sen, and Sukhamoy Chakraborty made those years at DSE extraordinary,” he said, adding that Dr Singh’s calm demeanor and modesty left a lasting impression.

Years later, their paths crossed again when Mishra served as Secretary to the National Disaster Management Authority and the Ministry of Agriculture during Dr Singh’s term as Prime Minister.

Mishra observed, “Even in his highest office, he retained the same sincerity and humility I admired in him as a professor.”

Dr Manmohan Singh’s passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge and integrity celebrated by his peers and students.
