Punjab Power Utility Reports ₹103-Crore Flood Losses

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Sept. 12 — The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has reported damages of nearly ₹103 crore from the recent floods, according to a preliminary assessment. The worst-hit facility was the Upper Beas Diversion Channel (UBDC) hydel power project in Pathankot, which alone suffered losses estimated at ₹62.5 crore.

The initial report noted that 2,322 distribution transformers were damaged, causing a loss of about ₹23.22 crore. In addition, 7,114 electricity poles were washed away or destroyed, adding another ₹3.56 crore to the toll. Nearly 864 km of conductors and supply lines also collapsed, accounting for ₹4.32 crore in losses.

PSPCL said its own infrastructure — including office buildings, control rooms and equipment — sustained damages worth ₹2.61 crore. Grid substations recorded civil losses of ₹2.55 crore, while critical components such as vacuum circuit breakers, panels, batteries and relays valued at ₹46 lakh were severely affected.

“The floods have caused unprecedented damage to our power network. Transformers, poles, and lines were submerged or swept away,” a senior PSPCL official said. “Our repair teams have worked round-the-clock to restore electricity at critical sub-stations and in affected villages.”

Officials cautioned that the figures may rise. “This is only the initial estimate. The actual losses are likely to increase once the floodwaters recede and we are able to carry out a fresh ground-level assessment,” the official added.
