Panjab University Reforms Put on Hold

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, November 5, 2025 — The Union Government has delayed the implementation of its proposed overhaul of Panjab University’s governing bodies, a decision that comes amid growing protests and political pushback.

According to a revised notification, the Punjab University Act, 1947, “shall have effect from the date, as appointed by the Central Government, subject to the following modifications,” effectively postponing the changes until a fresh date is issued.

The announcement follows days of demonstrations by students and opposition parties, and objections from farmer unions, who have argued that the reforms undermine the university’s autonomy. Supporters of the move, however, contend that restructuring the Senate and Syndicate is essential to reduce political interference in university affairs.

Political analysts said the Centre’s latest order appears to be a strategic retreat, aimed at easing tensions while maintaining the long-term objective of governance reforms.
