Punjab Upgrades Six Sahnewal Schools Under ₹71.5 Lakh Development Push

by TheReportingTimes

SAHNEWAL, May 17— Punjab’s housing and urban development minister, Hardeep Singh Mundian, on Friday said the state’s priorities extend beyond infrastructure to significantly improving education quality. Speaking at the inauguration of development projects worth ₹71.50 lakh across six government schools in the Sahnewal constituency, Mundian emphasized that “we are not just building structures—we are shaping futures.”

The upgraded schools include Government Primary Schools in Mangli Nichi, Koom Kalan, Kishanpura, and Partapgarh; Government High School in Heeran; and Government Senior Secondary School in Koom Kalan. These institutions now feature smart classrooms, computer and science labs, boundary walls, and enhanced washroom facilities, aiming to provide a modern and secure learning environment.

“This initiative is part of the Punjab Sikhya Kranti, a mission to transform government schools across the state,” said Mundian. He noted that the campaign is backed by a ₹2,000 crore investment aimed at revamping educational infrastructure and outcomes.

As part of the broader reforms, schools are being equipped with better furniture, secure boundaries, clean drinking water, and well-stocked libraries. “These improvements are helping to build an atmosphere where students can learn with confidence and pride,” he added.

Mundian said Punjab has nearly 28 lakh students enrolled in approximately 20,000 government schools. “Many of these students had to study in poor conditions. In the last three years, we’ve worked hard to change that. Now, over 17,000 schools have Wi-Fi to support digital learning, and we’ve appointed new teachers to improve teaching quality,” the minister said.

The ongoing push reflects the state’s shift from basic provisioning to a more comprehensive approach to public education.
