Rohtak/Chandigarh, October 8: A day after 2001-batch Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar allegedly died by suicide, questions are emerging over the inclusion of his name in an FIR registered by Rohtak Police based on a complaint by a liquor contractor. Sources close to the family said Kumar’s name could not have been included in the FIR without state government approval.
The FIR, registered on Monday, alleged that Sushil, a person reportedly close to Kumar—then serving as IG, Rohtak—had sought a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh in Kumar’s name. The liquor contractor submitted CCTV footage and audio recordings as evidence. Sushil was arrested the same evening and produced in court.
Family sources asserted that Kumar’s death was not a suicide but that he “was driven” to it. The family is awaiting the return of the deceased officer’s wife, 2001-batch IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, who serves as Commissioner and Secretary of the Foreign Cooperation Department. She was accompanying a delegation led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini in Japan.
Amneet Kumar is being accompanied back by two officers from the delegation, while two other Haryana cadre IAS officers will escort her to Chandigarh after she lands in Delhi. Officials indicated a minor delay in her flight may require switching to a later connection.
The circumstances surrounding Kumar’s death and his inclusion in the FIR are expected to attract closer scrutiny in the coming days, as authorities continue their investigation into the alleged bribery complaint and its broader implications.
