Rain Cuts Off Mohali Villages

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, Aug 7: Overnight rain in the hills disrupted normal life downstream, with floodwater spilling over roads and causeways in parts of Mohali, leaving five villages cut off till late afternoon on Wednesday.

Road access to Jayanti Majri village, near Chandigarh, was snapped early morning as a seasonal rivulet swelled to dangerous levels. The rising water damaged a key causeway, isolating Jayanti Majri, Gurha, Kasauli, Karoundi, and Baghindi villages.

Hundreds of schoolchildren, office-goers, and milkmen were stranded as floodwater surged over the connecting road to Chandigarh. Long queues of vehicles and two-wheelers were seen building up on both ends of the waterlogged stretch, leaving commuters helpless for hours.

Residents expressed anger over the administration’s repeated failures to ensure permanent road infrastructure. “After so many years not a single bridge has been built, said a villager. “Every monsoon, we face the same situation. If someone falls ill, we cannot even reach a hospital in Chandigarh,” he added.

Although Anandpur Sahib MP Malwinder Singh Kang recently sanctioned ₹6 lakh for repairing the eroded causeway, villagers said bureaucratic delays cost them dearly. “The ramp of the causeway got washed away because the work was never started,” a resident claimed.
