TARN TARAN, 14 November — Shiromani Akali Dal’s Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, who initially led the first three rounds of counting in the Tarn Taran Assembly bypoll, slipped to second place and continues to trail Aam Aadmi Party’s Harmeet Singh Sandhu.
After 14 rounds, Sandhu leads by 11,117 votes, polling 37,582 compared to Randhawa’s 26,465. Independent candidate Mandeep Singh, backed by Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De), has overtaken Congress’ Karanbir Singh Burj for third place with 17,052 votes, while Burj has 12,809. BJP’s Harjit Singh Sandhu remains at 5,316 votes.
“The initial rounds were very close, but SAD has gradually lost ground,” an election official noted. Counting, which began at 8 a.m. at the International College of Nursing, Piddi, is scheduled to conclude in 16 rounds. Tuesday’s polling saw 60.95 per cent voter turnout.
Political observers said Tarn Taran’s bypoll results will be closely watched across Punjab. “The slip in SAD’s position reflects shifting voter preferences in the constituency,” one analyst mentioned.
