Saudi Arabia Halts Major Refinery Operations Amid Drone Attack

Ras Tanura Shutdown Follows Drone Interception; Brent Crude Jumps 10%

by TheReportingTimes

Riyadh, March 2: A drone strike targeting Saudi Aramco’s Ras Tanura refinery led to an immediate precautionary shutdown of the facility on Monday, according to industry sources. The incident occurs amidst a volatile three-day period of strikes across West Asia, triggered by recent military actions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

The defense ministry of Saudi Arabia confirmed that its forces intercepted two drones over the refinery, which serves as a critical export terminal for Saudi crude. Although the interception resulted in a fire caused by falling debris, officials stated that the blaze was contained and did not result in casualties. They maintained that the operational halt was a necessary safety measure given the fluid security environment.

The impact on the energy sector was immediate, as the Strait of Hormuz—a transit point for nearly a fifth of the world’s oil consumption—faced near-total disruptions. Experts declared that the targeting of such vital infrastructure could shift the geopolitical landscape of the Gulf. Mr. Soltvedt of Verisk Maplecroft affirmed that this development is likely to push Gulf nations toward a more active role in military operations against Iranian interests.

Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions reached a new peak as Iranian officials condemned recent attacks. Reza Najafi, Iran’s Ambassador to the IAEA, asserted that the U.S. and Israel had carried out “unlawful” strikes against Iranian sovereign sites. As Aramco evaluates the damage at Ras Tanura, the international community remains on high alert for further disruptions to the global fuel supply chain.
