JAMMU, May 30: Sikh United Front and several Sikh organisations came together on Thursday to mourn the passing of senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, remembering him as a lifelong public servant and a pillar of Sikh and Punjabi identity.

The condolence gathering was held under the chairmanship of Sudershan Singh Wazir, head of the Sikh United Front of Jammu and Kashmir, who expressed deep sorrow over Dhindsa’s demise. “He was a visionary leader, a seasoned parliamentarian, and a man who lived a life of commitment to public service,” Wazir said.

Dhindsa, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 89, served as a Rajya Sabha MP across two terms (1998–2004 and 2010–2022), and represented Sangrur in the Lok Sabha in 2004. A four-time MLA, he also held cabinet portfolios in Punjab and was Union Minister for Sports, Chemicals and Fertilisers in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government.

Wazir noted Dhindsa’s deep connection to Punjab’s grassroots, saying, “He always remained close to the people, their culture, and the Sikh Panth. He served with dignity, commitment and integrity.”

Community members and Sikh leaders offered floral tributes and observed prayers for peace to the departed soul. They also conveyed condolences to Dhindsa’s family and acknowledged his lasting contributions to public life and Sikh society.
