Chandigarh: State health facilities across Punjab have observed a marked increase in individuals accessing formal medical care, following systematic health outreach programs initiated in early 2025. Annual enrollment at public de-addiction centers rose from 9,577 in 2024 to 25,290 in 2025, while specialized rehabilitation centers observed admissions rise from 2,644 to 8,574 during the same period.
Mid-year tracking for 2026 shows consistent community engagement with care infrastructure. More than 14,000 individuals entered government de-addiction facilities by July, while rehabilitation centers admitted over 5,800 patients. Outpatient Opioid-Assisted Treatment centers also logged over 12,500 new registrations by August, reinforcing broader clinical options for affected families.
Administrative frameworks have supported this healthcare shift through statutory relief measures. Authorities noted that immunity provisions under Section 64A of the NDPS Act were extended to more than 11,000 eligible individuals by August 27, 2026, enabling affected persons to pursue structured rehabilitation programs without fear of legal penalty.
Health Minister Dr Balbir Singh declared that the multi-faceted campaign relies on enforcement, early prevention, and comprehensive treatment options. He stated that expanding institutional healthcare access ensures affected individuals can safely enter rehabilitation systems, restore family stability, and re-integrate into society.
