Chandigarh, Feb 14: Haryana authorities have collected over ₹15.97 lakh in penalties following a month-long intensive campaign against plastic waste violations. The Haryana State Pollution Control Board carried out the inspections to verify adherence to the Plastic Waste Management Rules and the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework.

The drive, which ran from late December to mid-January, saw officials conducting field visits to ensure that plastic waste is being segregated and disposed of according to legal standards. A total of 1,849 challans were issued to units and individuals found in breach of the environmental laws.

“Scientific disposal of plastic waste is mandatory under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986,” a department official noted.

The HSPCB spokesperson mentioned that regional officers are under strict orders to continue these inspections. The board is utilizing a combination of physical site visits and digital data verification to track compliance levels across different sectors.

The spokesperson directly said that the crackdown focused on the 2016 rules and their various amendments. The penalties imposed as environmental compensation are intended to deter future violations and promote the proper handling of non-biodegradable waste.
