State Women’s Commission Initiates Probe into Khaira’s Comments

Police investigation sought into social media post targeting welfare scheme beneficiaries

Chandigarh, March 10: The Punjab State Women’s Commission has called for a police inquiry and summoned senior Congress leadership over remarks targeting a government financial aid program. The move follows a controversial social media statement by MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira concerning the Rs 1,000 monthly assistance provided to women in the state.

In its directive, the commission affirmed that both Khaira and PPCC Chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring must present themselves at the commission’s office this Thursday. The panel noted that the comments, which referenced traditional dance in relation to the cash incentive, were derogatory toward the women involved.

“How can women who are made to perform Giddha for just Rs 1,000 be expected to raise surmein (brave sons)?” Khaira had posted in response to a video of women celebrating the scheme. The commission asserted that these remarks required a formal explanation. To ensure a thorough review, the commission stated it has sought a report from an SP-rank officer through the Kapurthala police.

The fallout from the remarks has dominated legislative debates, with the ruling AAP accusing the opposition of maintaining a “feudal mindset.” Finance Minister Harpal Cheema asserted that the language used by the Congress leader reflects a broader lack of respect for women and marginalized communities.

While the Congress party has faced intense pressure in the Assembly, the commission’s summons marks a formal legal escalation of the matter. All eyes are now on the scheduled appearance on March 12, as the commission evaluates whether the remarks constitute a violation of the dignity of women in the state.
