Suspended Punjab DIG Bhullar denied bail by CBI court

by TheReportingTimes

CHANDIGARH , Jan 2— The CBI court here on Friday refused to grant bail to suspended Punjab Police DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar in a corruption case involving alleged bribery.

Bhullar and his associate Kirishanu Sharda were arrested on October 16, following a trap operation linked to a complaint filed by Akash Batta, a Mandi Gobindgarh resident. Batta claimed Bhullar demanded a bribe via a middleman to drop a 2023 FIR at Sirhind police station and prevent adverse action against his scrap business.

Bhullar’s counsel argued that the investigation was complete and the challan filed. “There is no chance for my client to interfere with witnesses,” SPS Bhullar said.

Opposing the bail, public prosecutor Narender Singh told the court, “Releasing the accused could compromise the integrity of witness statements.”

The court dismissed the plea. Bhullar, who has also been denied default bail in a separate disproportionate assets case, remains in Burail Jail. His petition for interim bail and a stay on proceedings at the Supreme Court was similarly rejected.
