The magic of lukewarm water for healthy hair

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, September 26: When it comes to washing hair, many people either reach for scalding hot water or a cold splash, thinking it will help cleanse or invigorate. Experts, however, say the sweet spot is little warm water — not too hot, not too cold — for optimal hair and scalp health.

Warm water opens the hair cuticle slightly without damaging it, allowing dirt, sweat, and excess oils to be washed away effectively. But unlike hot water, which can strip hair of natural oils and leave it dry or brittle, little warm water exerts just the right amount of gentle pressure on the scalp. “The warmth stimulates blood flow, which nourishes hair follicles, but it isn’t harsh enough to cause irritation or dryness,” noted Trisha Kapoor, a Delhi-based trichologist.

Cold water, in contrast, may close the cuticle abruptly, leaving residues of oil or shampoo behind. While a final rinse with cool water can add shine, washing the entire scalp with cold water may not clean as effectively.

Another benefit of using slightly warm water is its comfort and consistency. It helps dissolve shampoos and conditioners fully, reducing the chance of buildup. “Many clients feel they need hot water to feel clean,” Kapoor added, “but mild warmth achieves the same effect without compromising scalp health.”

Ayurveda and natural hair care advocates also recommend warm water, often in combination with herbal shampoos or home remedies. Onion, rosemary, or amla rinses, for instance, work best when applied with warm water, which allows the nutrients to penetrate hair shafts gently.

In short, washing hair with little warm water balances cleansing, comfort, and hair care. It opens the scalp enough for blood circulation, cleans without stripping natural oils, and leaves hair smoother and healthier. For those aiming for long-term hair vitality, experts suggest skipping extremes and trusting the lukewarm touch.
