Two Held with 6 Kg Heroin in Amritsar

by TheReportingTimes

Amritsar, June 9 – In a major strike against cross-border drug trafficking, Punjab Police have arrested two suspected smugglers and seized 6 kilograms of high-grade heroin in the border district of Amritsar, officials said on Sunday.

The operation, led by Amritsar Rural Police, resulted in the arrest of Gurditta alias Kalu and Captain near Bhakna village while they were allegedly transporting the narcotics on a motorcycle. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Gharinda police station.

Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed the arrests and seizure on social media platform X, calling it a “significant breakthrough against trans-border narco-smuggling.”

“Acting on specific intelligence, a police team intercepted the accused while they were ferrying a heroin consignment believed to have been sent by Pakistan-based handlers for distribution in Punjab,” Yadav said.

He added that one more accused in the case remains absconding and is being actively pursued by law enforcement agencies.

The seizure is the latest in a series of crackdowns along Punjab’s international border with Pakistan, where drones and human couriers are frequently used to smuggle narcotics. Police say the 6 kg haul could have fetched crores in the international black market.

Officials have not yet disclosed the intended destination of the consignment or details about the Pakistan-based sender, citing ongoing investigations.
