Dalang (Lahaul), Himachal Pradesh, July 21: Two children of migrant labourers drowned while bathing in a water tank near an army camp in Dalang village of Lahaul district. The tragedy occurred when the children were left unsupervised as their parents had gone to work in nearby fields.
According to initial reports, three children had entered the tank to bathe, but two of them slipped into the deeper section and drowned. The third child reportedly escaped and raised an alarm.
Local police reached the site shortly after being alerted. Deputy Superintendent of Police Rashmi Sharma from Keylong confirmed the incident and said, “The bodies of the two children were recovered and sent for post-mortem. After completing necessary formalities, the bodies were handed over to their grieving parents.”
The incident has cast a pall of sorrow over the area, with locals mourning the loss. Authorities are expected to look into safety measures around such water bodies, especially those frequented by children of labourers living in temporary settlements.
Police have initiated inquest proceedings and are in touch with the families of the victims to provide necessary assistance.
