Amritsar, October 18 – The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Amritsar Zonal Unit, seized gold worth Rs 94 lakh from two passengers arriving from Dubai at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport, officials said.

The passengers were found concealing gold ornaments, including chains, bangles, and rings, inside the pockets of their cargo pants. “Each passenger was carrying 430.44 grams and 396.44 grams of gold respectively, with a combined estimated market value of Rs 94 lakh,” a DRI spokesperson said.

The operation followed specific intelligence that some passengers arriving from Dubai were attempting to smuggle gold into India. Acting on the tip-off, DRI officers conducted a search at the airport and intercepted the two passengers, who appeared suspicious. Detailed examination confirmed the hidden jewellery.

Both passengers have been detained for questioning as authorities investigate whether they are linked to a larger gold smuggling network. “This seizure is part of our ongoing efforts to curb gold smuggling through international airports,” the DRI said in a statement.

All confiscated ornaments were seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, and further legal proceedings are underway.
