Chandigarh, Dec 20: The body of an unidentified man was found in a roadside drain near Sukhna Choe in Zirakpur on Friday morning, police said, triggering a brief traffic disruption in the area.
According to officials, passers-by spotted the body lying in the drain along the road and alerted the police. A team from the Zirakpur police station reached the spot, cordoned off the area and took custody of the body.
“The body has been sent to the civil hospital mortuary for postmortem,” said Gurpreet Singh, in-charge of the Baltana police post. “No visible injury marks were found during the preliminary examination, but the exact cause of death will be known after the medical report.”
The discovery drew a large number of onlookers, resulting in traffic congestion on both sides of the road for about 30 minutes. Police later diverted vehicles through alternate routes to ease the situation.
Investigators said efforts were underway to establish the man’s identity. CCTV footage from nearby establishments is being examined to trace his movements prior to the incident.
Police said it was too early to determine whether the death was accidental or involved foul play.
