Shimla, July 7, 2025 — As Himachal Pradesh reels under the devastation caused by cloudbursts and landslides, a political spat has erupted between Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Vikramaditya Singh and newly elected Mandi MP Kangana Ranaut over the latter’s remarks about her limited authority in disaster relief efforts.
Taking a swipe at Kangana’s statement that she lacks a cabinet or disaster funds, Vikramaditya said helping people does not require a formal post. “You do not need a chair to help someone, whether you have a cabinet rank or not. What you need is strong willpower,” Singh wrote on social media Monday. “I was sad to see how this whole topic was being ridiculed,” he added.
His comment came a day after Kangana, during her visit to flood-hit areas in Mandi alongside Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, told reporters, “Regarding disaster relief, I do not have a cabinet. I have my two brothers who are always with me. MPs have limited scope. Still, I come and visit because I am also a Himachali.”
Ranaut explained that as a Member of Parliament, she has no direct authority over relief funds. “There is no disaster-related fund that will be given to me—it will go to the state government. However, I will try to bring assistance from the Centre,” she said, adding, “We are the link between the state and the central government, instrumental in getting projects and raising grievances.”
The remarks drew sharp criticism amid growing public frustration, especially in Mandi district, where incessant rains have claimed at least 14 lives, left 28 people missing, and destroyed over 150 homes. Roads and bridges have been washed away, and as of Monday morning, 177 roads remained blocked in the region.
Hitting back at Singh’s jibe, Kangana said the state government should focus on fixing its failures instead of targeting her. “Those who have totally failed in their work should not give me advice. Rather, they should focus on improving their shameful situation,” she said Monday.
“One thing is clear: this government has totally failed and people have realised this now. Now crying ‘Kangana Kangana’ will not help them. People have seen their real faces,” she added.
While relief efforts are ongoing, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted more heavy rain across Himachal in the coming days, raising concerns over further disruptions in already fragile regions. As state and central agencies scramble to restore connectivity and rescue operations, political leaders have turned to blame games, even as the public awaits decisive, coordinated action.
