Chandigarh, June 26: A long-standing feud among taxi drivers turned violent at the Chandigarh International Airport on Monday evening, leaving one driver critically injured in the airport’s parking area.
The victim, Gagandeep Singh, a taxi driver from Muktsar, was assaulted with sharp-edged weapons and rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh. He is currently under treatment and reported to be in stable condition.
In his statement to the police, Singh alleged that the attack stemmed from an old rivalry. Acting on his complaint, police have registered a case against eight individuals. Five of them—Pramod, Gurdeep, Gurjeet, Harjinder Singh, and Rajinder—have been arrested so far.
“Raids are being carried out to trace and arrest the remaining accused,” said Deputy Superintendent of Police Amarpreet Singh. He added that initial investigation points to a dispute over parking space as the immediate cause of the confrontation.
