Waste segregation drive kicks off

Civic body targets garbage hotspots through source separation

Mohali, Jan 27: The Mohali Municipal Corporation will formalize its waste management protocol this week by launching a city-wide segregated collection drive on January 28. The move is aimed at resolving long-standing disposal issues by ensuring that garbage is sorted at the point of origin rather than at secondary collection points.

The program focuses on shifting households and offices toward a three-way segregation model involving wet, dry, and domestic hazardous waste.

By preventing the mixing of materials, the civic body hopes to accelerate the processing speed at the Jagatpura facility and reduce the environmental impact of urban refuse.
MLA Kulwant Singh mentioned that the strategy includes a mix of infrastructure improvements and strict enforcement.

He said the effort is geared toward making the city cleaner through better recycling and composting habits.

“The initiative would promote composting of wet waste and recycling of dry waste,” Singh said.
This operational change follows a period of planning to bring Mohali in line with National Green Tribunal standards. The new system will utilize specialized vehicles and private contractors to maintain road cleanliness and ensure that waste is transported directly to designated management centers.

The administration has indicated that the rollout will be accompanied by a penalty system for those who fail to comply with the new rules. This approach is part of a larger effort to adopt sustainable practices and fulfill the state’s environmental objectives regarding waste redesign and reuse.
