Why KKR’s ₹25.2 crore buy Cameron Green will earn less

by TheReportingTimes

Abu Dhabi, Dec 16— Cameron Green’s blockbuster ₹25.2 crore sale to Kolkata Knight Riders at the IPL 2026 auction grabbed headlines, but the Australian all-rounder’s actual earnings this season will be capped at ₹18 crore under IPL regulations.

The league introduced the cap last year after franchises raised concerns that some overseas players were exploiting supply-demand dynamics by registering only for mini-auctions. The rule pegs the maximum overseas salary to the highest retention bracket.

“If the bid crosses ₹18 crore, the player still receives only ₹18 crore,” an IPL official said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo. “The remaining amount goes to the BCCI for player welfare.”

Green became the most expensive overseas player in IPL auction history after KKR outbid Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings. Rajasthan dropped out around ₹13 crore, while CSK pushed the price beyond ₹25 crore before KKR’s final bid.

Green previously featured for Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru across the 2023 and 2024 seasons, scoring 707 runs in 29 matches at an average of 41.58 and striking at over 153. He also picked up 16 wickets. He missed the 2025 auction due to injury.

At the international level, Green has established himself as a reliable T20 all-rounder, combining power-hitting with seam bowling.

The auction also saw notable names go unsold. India batters Prithvi Shaw and Sarfaraz Khan failed to find buyers despite solid domestic form. Shaw scored 183 runs in seven matches in this year’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, striking at over 160.

The IPL 2026 auction continues as franchises fine-tune their squads ahead of the new season.
