NEW DELHI, AUGUST 16: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has called upon the rising generation of legal professionals to preserve the core values of justice, liberty, and human dignity that have guided the Republic over the past eight decades. Speaking at the apex court complex on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day, CJI Kant asserted that while legal and judicial institutions have matured alongside the nation, the future strength of these systems depends on the dedication of young practitioners.
“Ours was not primarily an armed insurrection; it was instead a sustained challenge to the legitimacy of colonial rule through political movements, petitions, public debates, and, most importantly, through the language of law,” CJI Kant declared during the event organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association.
The CJI explained that courts continue to serve as vital, unifying spaces where citizens from diverse backgrounds assert their rights against arbitrary actions. Drawing parallels between past legal leaders and modern practitioners, he observed that the legal profession was never a passive observer, but an active participant in building the country’s ethical and legal foundation.
Understanding the anxieties surrounding early legal practice, CJI Kant reassured young graduates that the senior leadership recognizes the pressure of establishing a practice today. He maintained that the resilience and intellectual capability shown by entry-level lawyers present a promising outlook for the judicial system.
“Please know that the Bar and the Bench remain committed to your growth: by extending mentorship, by creating meaningful opportunity, and by placing our confidence in you. The miles that remain are yours to walk, and we walk with you,” CJI Kant stated.
He noted that today’s young professionals bring a unique combination of technological fluency and structural awareness, ensuring that the application of law remains closely connected to societal needs. The event concluded with remarks from Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh and key representatives of the legal community.
