CHANDIGARH / KHANNA — Irrigation facilities across the Khanna constituency received a major boost as state officials dedicated newly completed canal and pipeline works worth Rs 70.52 crore to the public. Cabinet Ministers Barinder Kumar Goyal and Tarunpreet Singh Sond oversaw the inauguration ceremony at Bhattian village, marking a significant milestone in regional water resource management.
The project incorporates extensive concrete channel lining and underground piping designed to supply water to nearly 30 villages, with plans to bring remaining regional farmland under the network in upcoming phases.
“Canal irrigation has now reached over 37,000 acres across nearly 30 villages,” Barinder Kumar Goyal declared. “Remaining agricultural land in the area will also be linked to the canal network soon.”
Barinder Kumar Goyal affirmed that strategic upgrades to existing channels allowed the department to boost overall carrying capacity by 12,000 cusecs without incurring extra land acquisition costs. He noted that groundwater tables across the state have begun recovering, a development formally recognized at the central government level.
Expressing gratitude for the allocation of development funds to Khanna, Tourism and Investment Promotion Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond commended the administration’s focus on agricultural support.
“Now the Punjabi farmers are getting 8 hours of uninterrupted daytime electricity for tubewells, meaning they no longer have to spend nights in the fields to irrigate their crops,” Tarunpreet Singh Sond stated.
