Zirakpur: wall collapses at Maya Garden Phase 2

by TheReportingTimes

Zirakpur, Sept. 4 — Heavy rainfall on Thursday brought life to a standstill in Zirakpur, with severe waterlogging reported across the township. Among the worst-hit areas was Maya Garden Phase 2 along VIP Road, where a retaining wall collapsed after hours of relentless downpour, sparking fresh safety and security concerns for residents.

The collapse has worsened flooding inside the housing society, where residents said water mixed with debris was rushing into premises. “The breach has made the situation unsafe — stray animals and even snakes have entered the colony,” one resident said, adding that families now fear for their health and security.

The latest incident has revived bitter memories of 2023, when the same wall had caved in during heavy rains. At that time, residents were forced to pool their own resources to rebuild it, after receiving no assistance from authorities. With the structure down again, residents expressed frustration and demanded immediate intervention. “How many times do we have to rebuild this ourselves? The administration must act before lives are put at risk,” another resident said.

Beyond the housing society, flooding in Zirakpur disrupted traffic, damaged property, and left several roads submerged through the day. Locals said the situation exposed glaring civic lapses, with no lasting measures taken despite repeated flooding in previous monsoons.

With the rains showing little sign of easing, residents across Zirakpur called for long-overdue accountability and urgent steps to strengthen infrastructure against recurrent downpours.
