Amritsar MPs urge PM to declare city a ‘no-war zone’

by TheReportingTimes

AMRITSAR, June 4 – Amid rising Indo-Pak tensions, Congress Lok Sabha MPs Gurjeet Singh Aujla and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging that Amritsar be declared a “no-war zone”, citing the city’s spiritual significance and recent drone threats to the Golden Temple.

The MPs suggested the United Nations be approached to formally recognise this status, similar to protections around Vatican City. Aujla, who represents Amritsar, said the Golden Temple is a symbol of world peace, visited by millions, and must be shielded from military conflict. He demanded permanent, non-political security arrangements for the shrine.

Randhawa, MP from Gurdaspur, said the recent India-Pakistan standoff, following Operation Sindoor, had “revived legitimate concerns” over Amritsar’s vulnerability. Both leaders invoked the global importance of the shrine, comparing it to Mecca and the Vatican.

Sikh organisations in Pakistan have also echoed the sentiment, demanding Nankana Sahib be designated a “no-war zone.”
