Back-to-Back Chain Snatchings in Sector 15

by TheReportingTimes

Chandigarh, June 11 — Two separate incidents of chain snatching targeting women were reported in Sector 15 within 24 hours, prompting concerns over public safety in the area. In both cases, assailants escaped with gold chains collectively valued at ₹2.35 lakh.

According to police, both crimes have been registered at the Sector-14 police station, and investigations are ongoing.

The latest incident occurred early Tuesday morning around 6 a.m., when Monika, 28, was out for a walk with her sister near the Sector 15/16 dividing road. “Two men on a motorcycle approached us. The pillion rider suddenly grabbed my gold chain and sped away,” Monika told police. She added that one of the accused had his face covered while the rider wore a helmet.

A day earlier, on Monday evening, Mamta Sharma, 45, another resident of Sector 15, was returning home from a market visit when she was targeted. As she walked past a park, a man snatched her chain and fled on a waiting motorcycle. “The whole thing happened so fast. I couldn’t even note the bike’s number,” she said.

Police said both incidents appear to follow a similar pattern, with the snatchers using motorcycles and targeting women walking alone or in quiet stretches. Cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code have been registered, and authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from nearby areas.

“We are analyzing all available surveillance and working with eyewitness accounts to identify the suspects,” said an officer from the Sector-14 police station. “Patrolling has also been intensified in and around Sector 15.”

Residents have raised concerns about the increasing number of such incidents in residential neighborhoods, especially during early mornings and late evenings, and have urged police to step up visible security measures.
