NIA Charges ULFA(I) Chief in Assam IED Plot

by TheReportingTimes

GUWAHATI, June 13 – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed a chargesheet against three individuals, including United Liberation Front of Asom–Independent (ULFA-I) chief Paresh Baruah, for allegedly plotting a series of IED blasts across Assam to disrupt Independence Day celebrations in 2024, officials said on Saturday.

Baruah, who is also known by several aliases including Paresh Asom, Kamruj Zaman Khan, Nur-uz-Zaman, Zaman Bhai, Pradip, and Paban Baruah, is the Myanmar-based chairman and self-styled commander-in-chief of the banned insurgent group ULFA(I).

The chargesheet, filed on Friday in a Guwahati court, also names Abhijit Gogoi alias Abhijeet Gogoi and Jahnu Boruah alias Arnob Asom alias Huntu. All three have been charged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act.

According to the NIA, the accused were directly linked to the planting of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) near Dispur Last Gate in Guwahati as part of a broader conspiracy to stage coordinated blasts across the state.

“These IEDs were intended to cause death or serious injuries, destroy public property, and instill fear to undermine India’s sovereignty and unity,” the NIA said in a statement.

The central agency took over the case in September 2024 and uncovered a plot designed to “spread terror among the people” and disrupt national observances.

Investigators believe the attempted attacks were orchestrated under the direction of ULFA(I), a proscribed separatist outfit with a long history of violence in the Northeast.
