Bhakra Dam Safe Despite Himachal Rains

by TheReportingTimes

Nangal, July 1: Despite days of heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh, there is currently no threat of flooding from the Bhakra Dam, with water levels still nearly 100 feet below the danger mark, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

Due to continuous downpours in the hilly regions of Himachal, rivers such as the Beas and Sutlej are flowing with increased stormwater. However, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has clarified that there is no immediate concern regarding the Bhakra Dam.

As of 6:00 am today, the water level in the Bhakra Dam stood at 1576.03 feet—well below the maximum permissible level of 1680 feet. The inflow into Govind Sagar Lake has been recorded at 44,534 cusecs.

Out of this, 21,025 cusecs is being released through the dam’s turbines into Nangal Dam, from where 10,150 cusecs is being channeled into the Anandpur Sahib Idle Canal and 12,350 cusecs into BBMB’s Nangal Hydel Canal, based on state-wise demand.

Currently, only 650 cusecs of water is being released into the Sutlej River, indicating no need for alarm. BBMB officials noted that in case of excessive inflow, the floodgates could be opened, but such a situation has not arisen so far.

Officials are closely monitoring the situation, and say any future releases will be regulated and communicated in advance.
