CHANDIGARH, Aug 13 — Widespread rainfall across Punjab is set to continue over the next two days, with the Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert until August 15 and warning of heavy showers in parts of the state.
The average maximum temperature has dropped by 0.6°C in the past 24 hours and now stands 3.5°C below normal. Bathinda recorded the state’s highest temperature at 36.3°C, while Patiala received 8.4 mm of rainfall.
Authorities said water levels in the Beas River have risen following releases from Pong Dam, creating flood-like conditions in Hoshiarpur, Ferozepur, and Kapurthala. Water discharged from Harike Head Works has inundated around 600 acres in seven villages of the Jira area — Nizam Wala, Sultana Wala, Dhalki Wali, Basti Ram Lal, Basti Khan, Laddu, and Muthian — while waterlogging has also been reported in Hussainiwala.
The Met office said heavy rain is expected today in six districts bordering Himachal Pradesh — Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Mohali, and Fatehgarh Sahib — covering 75 to 100 percent of these areas.
Moderate rainfall, covering 25 to 50 percent of the area, is forecast in Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, and Patiala. Light rain at isolated spots is expected in Ferozepur, Moga, Fazilka, Muktsar, Faridkot, Bathinda, Barnala, Sangrur, and Mansa, affecting up to 25 percent of these districts.
