YAMUNANAGAR, Aug. 17 — The Som river in Yamunanagar district surged into full spate on Sunday after days of heavy rain, sparking panic among residents living along its banks.
At Dhanaura village, the river’s water was seen flowing over the bridge, raising fears of a potential breach in embankments that could flood surrounding areas and damage standing crops. “The situation is tense in riverside villages, and people are worried about possible flooding,” an official said.
The district administration, along with the irrigation department, has deployed teams to monitor the water level. Residents have been advised to avoid going near the river as a precaution.
Adding to concerns, the Pathrala river has also been swelling under the impact of the continuous downpour, further heightening the threat of flooding in low-lying areas.
Officials said round-the-clock monitoring is being carried out and emergency measures are in place should the water level rise further.
