Man Arrested After Indian-Origin Businessman Fatally Attacked in Edmonton

by TheReportingTimes

EDMONTON, Oct 30— A 55-year-old Indian-origin businessman, identified as Arvi Singh Sagoo, died after being attacked by a stranger in Canada’s Edmonton city, authorities said on Thursday. The fatal assault took place on October 19 when Sagoo confronted a man who was urinating on his car outside The Common restaurant on 109 Street.

Police said Sagoo and his girlfriend had just finished dinner when they returned to their parked vehicle and noticed the man. “When Mr. Sagoo questioned him, the suspect hit him in the head,” the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) said in a statement. “He fell and lost consciousness immediately.”

Sagoo was taken to hospital with critical injuries and placed on life support. He died on October 24 after succumbing to head trauma, investigators confirmed.

Police arrested 40-year-old Kyle Papin shortly after the incident. Papin was originally charged with aggravated assault, but with Sagoo’s death, homicide detectives have taken over the case. Officials noted that additional or upgraded charges are likely.

“The victim and suspect did not know each other,” police said, adding that the confrontation appeared to be spontaneous. “It was an unfortunate escalation of an unexpected situation.”

Papin is expected to appear in court on November 4.

Friends and local business leaders described Sagoo as a kind and respected member of Edmonton’s Indian community. “He was the sort of person who stood up when something wasn’t right,” said a family acquaintance. “No one imagined it would cost him his life.”
