Mann unveils year-long events for Guru Tegh Bahadur

Anandpur Sahib, November 24, 2025 — Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann announced a series of long-term commemorative programs on Sunday as part of the state’s observances for the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, after thousands of devotees and interfaith leaders gathered in Anandpur Sahib for a large all-religion conference. Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal joined religious heads from multiple countries and faiths who came together to pay their respects.

Describing the significance of the day, Kejriwal said Guru Tegh Bahadur’s martyrdom was distinct in history. “I do not think there is any other example of someone accepting martyrdom for the protection of another religion,” Kejriwal said in his address. He stated that people across the world had sacrificed themselves for their personal faith, whereas the Guru “gave his life so others could freely practice theirs,” adding that world leaders visiting Punjab together underlined that “we are all one.”

Mann noted that Punjab has long been home to saints, scholars and martyrs, and said the state government would continue its efforts to preserve communal harmony. “It is our duty to safeguard this inheritance,” he said, adding that the Guru’s sacrifice was “unsurpassed.” Mann also said future generations needed to fully understand the moral significance of the event.

Officials reported that the government would organise multiple annual programs every year, including major gatherings on the Guru’s martyrdom day, and incorporate relevant chapters into school curriculum. Mann said students must be taught the lives of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib and other martyrs including Bhai Mati Das, Bhai Sati Das and Bhai Dayala.

Kejriwal informed the congregation that the state has begun development work in 142 villages associated with the Guru. He described the initiative as a sustained attempt to keep memory alive along with improving infrastructure. He said the effort would allow each of those villages to benefit economically, culturally and spiritually from the legacy.

Authorities said preparations for the event began weeks ago, with 700 free e-rickshaws operating throughout the town, 20 shuttle buses on designated routes, expanded parking sites and a temporary tent city. A Nagar Kirtan that began from Srinagar is travelling through multiple Punjab districts before reaching Anandpur Sahib, according to officials.

As he wrapped up his speech, Kejriwal urged citizens to embody the Guru’s principle of universal welfare: “Every human being has the right to their own belief, and we must protect that right.” He noted that the teachings of Guru Sahib are increasingly relevant in a world struggling with conflict and division.

Officials said the purpose of the conference was to underline shared values of coexistence and mutual respect at a time when global societies are facing heightened tensions. They added that the gathering demonstrated that diverse religions can honour a single message of humanity together.
