Chandigarh opens projects on reclaimed land

Chandigarh, Nov 29: Months after clearing nearly 40 acres of encroached land across five colonies, the Chandigarh administration has rolled out major infrastructure work tied to its Third Phase expansion plan.

A UT Estate Office official said the transition from clearance to construction has moved quickly. “We’ve finished the detailed planning for every parcel and shared it with the executing agencies,” the official said, adding that the projects are being carried out “strictly under the Master Plan to improve mobility, civic services and economic activity.”

The land was reclaimed from Sanjay Colony, Janata Colony, Adarsh Colony, Shahpur Colony and the Furniture Market area. Officials said each site will now support public infrastructure instead of unplanned settlements. “The intention is to replace the earlier sprawl with regulated, sustainable development,” the official said.

Sanjay Colony, cleared on April 23, freed six acres valued at about ₹300 crore. The plot is earmarked for rail yard expansion, logistics facilities and industrial units supporting Northern Railway.

In Janata Colony (Sector 25), 12 acres worth nearly ₹350 crore were recovered on May 6. The redevelopment blueprint includes new homes, internal roads, a shopping area, community services, a school and children’s recreation spaces.

The June 19 clearance at Adarsh Colony (Sector 54) opened around 12 acres valued at roughly ₹750 crore. The Chandigarh Housing Board has begun new housing schemes here, while the UT also plans about 1,000 rental units for employees. The site will link to adjoining Sectors 53, 54 and 55 under the Master Plan.

The Furniture Market stretch in Sectors 53–54, cleared on July 20, released another 12 acres worth around ₹400 crore. Work includes new roads, parks, civic amenities and mixed residential-commercial blocks, along with the planned 1,000 government rental accommodations.

The last eviction was at Shahpur Colony on September 30, where 4.5 acres valued at ₹250 crore are being converted into commercial space, with a shopping complex, office areas and a business market.

“These projects are meant to reshape the cleared pockets into functional, connected and publicly useful zones,” the UT official said.
