Chandigarh, December 6 — Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa has demanded a Central agency inquiry into Patiala SSP Varun Sharma after an alleged audio clip emerged in which the officer purportedly instructs personnel to obstruct candidates during nomination filings for the local body polls.
Bajwa told the High Court that the clip, combined with reports from December 4, indicates systematic interference by police. “If the very police meant to guarantee free and fair polls starts abusing its power, the faith of the people would be shaken,” he said. He called the conduct “a serious one” and asked for a time-bound, independent investigation by the CBI or another Central agency.
His petition recounts episodes of candidates being waylaid, detained or turned back, and their nomination papers snatched or destroyed at multiple locations.
Advocate Arshpreet Khadial made an oral mention before the Chief Justice, who agreed to list the plea for December 8.
