Mumbai, Jan 25: Government Railway Police officers apprehended a suspect on Sunday morning in connection with the murder of a professor at Malad railway station. The suspect, Omkar Eknath Shinde, was tracked down to the Kurar suburb after investigators reviewed surveillance recordings from the station.
The fatal encounter involved Alok Kumar Singh, an academic at NM College, who was attacked on Saturday. Police reported that the violence was triggered by a brief argument between Singh and Shinde as they stepped off a local train.
The dispute reached a breaking point on the platform when Shinde, a daily-wage worker, reportedly used a sharp object to stab the professor. Singh was left in a pool of blood as his attacker disappeared into the terminal.
“The accused took advantage of the crowd and escaped from the spot, but was identified and apprehended with the help of CCTV footage,” the official said.
Witnesses and authorities moved Singh to a medical facility immediately after the attack, though he succumbed to his injuries before treatment could be administered.
Shinde is currently in custody and is being interrogated regarding the specifics of the altercation.
“Shinde has been arrested under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is underway,” the official noted.
