New Delhi, Feb 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman on Friday to offer congratulations following the party’s decisive win in the national parliamentary elections. The victory marks a significant political shift in the neighboring nation, with the BNP poised to lead the government after a two-decade hiatus.
During the conversation, the Prime Minister mentioned the historical and cultural connections between the two nations. He noted that the election results reflect a clear mandate from the people of Bangladesh and expressed India’s ongoing support for the country’s democratic journey.
“India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh,” Prime Minister Modi said in a statement following the call.
The elections were held after a period of significant political instability that followed the collapse of the previous administration in August 2024. Current projections indicate that the BNP has already secured more than 151 seats in the 300-seat parliament, crossing the majority threshold. Tarique Rahman is expected to take over the leadership from the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus.
“I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals,” the Prime Minister directly said.
The Indian government noted its commitment to regional stability and the prosperity of citizens in both countries. Officials mentioned that the Prime Minister’s outreach is a step toward ensuring continued cooperation on shared security and economic interests.
