CHANDIGARH, MAY 15 — Punjab’s election department has finalized the schedule for a comprehensive update of the state’s voter records, with the final publication of electoral rolls slated for October 1, 2026. Chief Electoral Officer Anindita Mitra stated on Thursday that January 1, 2003, has been established as the qualifying date for this intensive revision exercise.
The process will involve a massive door-to-door campaign where officials will visit residences up to three times to collect and verify voter forms. Mitra affirmed that the mapping process is already well underway, with rural areas showing 89.58 percent completion compared to 73 percent in urban centers. To ensure precision, the office has deployed 2,476 supervisors and 117 Electoral Registration Officers to oversee the field operations.
“All preparations for conducting the SIR in Punjab have been completed by the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer,” Mitra declared. She asserted that the administration is committed to making the process user-friendly by linking historical records with current rolls to help voters trace their registration history easily.
Political parties have been invited to a briefing on May 15 to discuss their role in the revision. Mitra asserted that the involvement of all stakeholders is vital for a fair outcome. She further stated that the rationalization of polling stations would be concluded by July 24, ensuring that the logistical framework is ready before the draft rolls are released to the public for review.
