Fuel Price Hike: Widespread AAP Protests in Punjab

District leaders warn of intensified agitation from streets to Parliament

AMRITSAR, May 16 — Coordinated public rallies disrupted traffic in several Punjab districts on Friday as the Aam Aadmi Party launched a statewide campaign against the central government’s recent decision to increase petrol and diesel rates.

The protests, which drew active participation in Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Jalandhar, focused on the cascading economic impact of fuel inflation on groceries, transit, and daily household maintenance. Party representatives argued that post-election price adjustments have become a predictable and damaging pattern.

“After the conclusion of elections in five states, the Central BJP government has continuously increased first the price of gas cylinders and now petrol prices, which has placed an economic burden on the lives of common people,” a joint statement from AAP leadership declared, noting that foreign and domestic economic strategies have proven ineffective.

The financial strain on essential goods formed the core of the opposition’s argument. Speaking to the gathered crowds, regional representatives asserted that the market prices of vegetables and daily necessities have experienced an immediate upward trend due to rising logistical and transport costs.

Addressing the gathering in Ludhiana, District President Jatinder Khangura stated that the party would not remain silent on the matter and promised a sustained campaign against the central administration’s economic directives.

“If the increased prices are not withdrawn immediately, Aam Aadmi Party will intensify this struggle further and will raise the voice for the rights of the people from the streets to Parliament,” Khangura declared. “The party always stands with the common people and will not tolerate this exploitation by the Central Government.”

Protest organizers across the state affirmed that the demonstrations mark the initial phase of a larger, structured movement intended to force a review of current petroleum pricing policies.
