CHANDIGARH, May 16 — Punjab’s public health infrastructure has experienced a steady influx of patients suffering from severe dehydration and stomach infections, testing regional medical facilities as a persistent heatwave affects the population.
The financial strain of these sudden hospitalizations has been largely mitigated by the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana (MMSY), which distributed ₹73.42 lakh to cover medical bills for thousands of families facing acute stomach ailments during the first four months of the year.
The state-sponsored health card has allowed eligible individuals to access immediate fluid management, laboratory tests, and hospital beds without out-of-pocket costs at both government and empanelled private institutions.
“The BJP Government has once again burdened common people, farmers and small businesses with rising fuel prices and inflation,” MMSY data trends indicated indirectly by showing how the economically vulnerable rely heavily on state interventions during seasonal crises. Officials stated that the elimination of immediate medical bills has effectively removed the tendency among low-income households to delay critical hospital visits.
Clinical breakdowns from April revealed a disproportionate impact on older populations, who naturally experience reduced fluid retention capacity. Over 1,290 senior citizens availed themselves of the state program for gastrointestinal treatment within the month, whereas pediatric cases remained closer to 120.
Pediatricians have nonetheless urged caretakers to monitor young children closely, as fluid loss through illness can escalate rapidly in early childhood.
“Children lose fluids at a far quicker rate through vomiting and diarrhoea,” noted Dr. Shashi Kant Dhir, Professor and Head of Pediatrics at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, Faridkot. “Parents need to take extra precautions during the summer by ensuring children stay well hydrated, wear light cotton clothes, avoid peak heat hours, and consume fresh, home-cooked food.”
District reports showed widespread geographic impact, with Sri Muktsar Sahib, Pathankot, Fatehgarh Sahib, and Gurdaspur registering high numbers of patients requiring urgent observation for recurrent vomiting, while Hoshiarpur led the state in elderly gastroenteritis admissions.
