Extreme Heat Forecasted for Delhi

Met department predicts sharp thermal rise across northern states from Monday

by TheReportingTimes

NEW DELHI, MAY 17 — Meteorological authorities have warned of an impending regional heatwave across northwestern India, with daytime mercury levels in the national capital expected to touch 45 degrees Celsius this week.

The sudden shift introduces a prolonged period of dry, hot weather across several states, ending a brief spell of near-normal seasonal temperatures.

Weather tracking stations reported that the thermal spike will officially commence on Monday, following consecutive weekend days where the city’s maximum readings surpassed 40 degrees Celsius. Official updates from the India Meteorological Department stated that maximum temperatures will hold firm between 43 and 45 degrees Celsius for at least a three-day period. Additionally, nighttime minimum temperatures are projected to stay well above standard parameters for this time of the year, tracking between 25 and 27 degrees Celsius at most observation points.

Independent climate experts affirmed that localized wind transformations are responsible for the severe weather development. Representatives from private forecasting agencies noted that hot, dry air masses migrating from the desert regions of Rajasthan and neighboring Pakistani territories have effectively displaced cooler air flows. Forecasters stated that the lack of atmospheric moisture combined with direct solar radiation will accelerate surface heating across the northern plains through May 23.

The federal alert system indicates that the heatwave will systematically expand across multiple administrative territories. Beyond the capital, severe conditions will develop over portions of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from May 18. Weather department officials maintained that parts of Uttar Pradesh will experience severe heatwave conditions after May 19, while central and southern pockets, including Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana, will simultaneously encounter unseasonably high temperatures through May 21.

Local municipal frameworks are monitoring the situation as daytime wind patterns are expected to intensify the thermal discomfort. Administrative statements noted that the region will encounter steady daytime surface winds blowing up to 30 kmph, with occasional gusts measured at 40 kmph, which will maintain dry conditions across the residential sectors.
