Universal health program lifts massive financial burden off local families

Bathinda, June 2: The immense financial relief provided by Punjab’s Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojana was brought to light following the successful heart surgery of Gurpreet Kaur, a homemaker from Bathinda. Doctors discovered that Kaur was living with a dangerous 22-millimeter hole between her heart’s upper chambers, an abnormality that caused irregular blood circulation and severe structural strain before being corrected at AIIMS Bathinda.

The operation was performed on May 5, 2026, using a specialized 24-millimeter occluder device to secure the defect. While consent documentation detailed severe risks, including hemodynamic instability, the procedure concluded without any secondary complications, allowing the patient to enter a stable recovery phase.

“Every minute felt longer than the last,” Kaur’s husband declared, recalling the intense anxiety outside the laboratory. “When the doctors finally came out and told us everything had gone well, it felt as though a mountain had been lifted from our shoulders.”

The state program, which currently extends up to ₹10 lakh in annual cashless medical coverage per eligible household, completely absorbed the one lakh rupee operational bill. The initiative has seen widespread adaptation statewide, with overall figures indicating that 175,210 patients have utilized the scheme to secure critical procedures without out-of-pocket expenses.

The administration maintained that these safeguards are designed to prevent low-income households from sliding into deep debt during unexpected medical emergencies. Commenting on the successful clinical outcome, Punjab Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh asserted that the policy successfully blends medical intervention with robust economic protection.

“Gurpreet’s recovery shows how timely medical care and financial protection can save lives and preserve the dignity of families,” Dr. Balbir Singh declared, noting that public healthcare resources remain fully committed to shielding citizens from heavy operational costs.
