Crackdowns on fake billing networks secure record revenue increases

Chandigarh, June 2: Intensified tax monitoring and anti-evasion drives helped Punjab generate ₹2,400.52 crore in gross GST revenue this past May, comfortably exceeding general domestic growth curves. Revealing the financial metrics in Chandigarh, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema maintained that the state’s 14.59 percent rate of collection expansion reflects a strengthening economic base driven by structured tax administration.

The regional collection metrics stand in sharp contrast to the broader national gross tax growth average of roughly 3.2 percent. Departmental reports noted that while actual cash collection grew by 6.57 percent, extensive compliance updates pushed the overall gross tax matrix much higher, bringing an extra ₹305.71 crore into the state treasury compared to May of the prior year.

“While Punjab’s cash collection growth stood at 6.57 percent, the State’s gross GST collection growth reached a much higher 14.59 percent, illustrating a strengthening state revenue base, enhanced compliance levels, and highly effective tax administration measures,” Cheema noted during his briefing.

The financial surge was heavily supported by targeted enforcement actions across major commercial hubs. State Intelligence and Preventive Units brought in penalties totaling ₹182.69 crore during the single monthly cycle. A primary breakthrough included dismantling an organized ₹85.4 crore tax fraud ring, where inspectors discovered fabricated transit papers and bogus invoices intended to siphon public funds, resulting in the recovery of approximately ₹3 crore from linked beneficiaries.

The government declared that these enforcement methodologies are part of a broader strategy to shield authentic businesses from unfair competition. The Finance Minister affirmed that the state maintains a firm zero-tolerance stance against fraudulent accounting, pledging that the taxation branch will continue balancing strict oversight with operational facilitation for honest commercial enterprises.
