Dhami offers condolences as investigators launch mechanical probe into fatal crash

Dehradun, June 10: A tragic highway excursion ended in the deaths of four travelers from the Delhi-NCR region on Wednesday along the main Mussoorie-Dehradun transport corridor in Uttarakhand. The victims’ vehicle careened off the mountain passage near Kolhukhet and fell nearly 500 meters into a gorge, an incident that regional authorities believe was triggered by a sudden loss of braking capability on the steep incline.

First responders discovered the vehicle completely destroyed at the base of the ravine after executing a rapid descent into the crash zone. Local authorities stated that none of the vehicle’s occupants survived the high-altitude fall, and the bodies were subsequently transported to regional medical facilities.

“The news of tourists losing their lives in the accident near Jharipani on the Mussoorie-Dehradun road was deeply saddening,” Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stated while addressing the incident.

The police report noted that the group was navigating the downward slope after visiting Uttarkashi when the driver encountered severe handling difficulties. Investigators stated that the vehicle, bearing a Delhi registration plate, crossed the road shoulder at a highly vulnerable point of the winding route.

The victims were subsequently identified by police personnel as Manit, 19; Satyaprakash of Sonipat; Savita, 48, of Nehru Nagar in Ghaziabad; and Sangeeta, 46, of Karol Bagh in New Delhi. Representatives from the local precinct stated that a comprehensive investigative report is being assembled to document the exact road and vehicle conditions present at the time of the departure.

The regional administration reaffirmed that safety protocols and mechanical integrity on steep hill routes remain a critical focus for local transit departments. Law enforcement personnel stated that the final mechanical autopsy of the vehicle chassis will clarify whether structural wear or sudden operational failure caused the platform to bypass the road barriers.
