New Delhi, July 17: Senior Punjab BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal has been designated as the new chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities by the Union Government. According to the formal notification issued on Friday, the veteran politician will head the minority rights body for a three-year tenure. Grewal takes over from the outgoing chief, Iqbal Singh Lalpura, following the completion of the previous panel’s term.
The transition at the statutory panel brings forward a notable sequence in the leadership structure of the organization.
The appointment establishes Grewal as the third Sikh leader to handle the responsibilities of the national chairperson, directly succeeding another member of the same community in a historic consecutive assignment. Previous iterations of the panel have been led by prominent public figures, including Tarlochan Singh, who was the first Sikh chairperson, as well as former Vice President Hamid Ansari.
The administrative confirmation arrived alongside extensive multi-state visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Chandigarh and parts of Punjab. As a core committee member of the state unit and a representative on the central BJP National Council, Grewal has consistently guided local organizational strategies. Observers declared that the decision to place a veteran regional face at the head of a major national panel functions as a significant indicator of solidarity with the community as the state prepares for its upcoming assembly elections.
The senior politician has a long history of managing complex local dialogues and public relations during periods of intense debate. Representatives declared that Grewal actively stepped forward to facilitate talks and reduce ideological distances between central authorities and local farming communities during major rural protests. Along with the top post, the central framework has been updated with the induction of Munawari Begum as the vice-chairperson and Glenn E Souza Ticlo as an executive member.
