New Delhi/Gurugram, July 24: A 26-day hunger strike staged by activist Sonam Wangchuk came to an end following direct intervention by Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. The midnight meeting, attended by Wangchuk’s wife Gitanjali Angmo, resulted in official guarantees addressing key concerns raised during the prolonged protest over examination irregularities.
“The decision followed appeals from 65 Members of Parliament across party lines and extended deliberations to prevent any potential unrest,” the activist declared regarding the conclusion of his fast.
The administration outlined specific assurances, including parliamentary deliberations on educational reforms, non-prosecution of peaceful protesters, and potential compensation measures for families impacted by exam leaks. Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly encouraged the activist to prioritize his recovery and follow medical guidance following his 11-kilogram weight loss over the fast. Despite the development, supporting groups including the Cockroach Janta Party asserted that their ongoing sit-in seeking systemic accountability and ministerial resignations remains active.
